Under continuous family management for a century and change, the Berghoff is
as much a part of Chicago as the wind. A temple to German comfort food, this Loop stalwart serves Teutonic chow amidst old world charm in its dark paneled dining room. The subtle, tinted light from original
stained glass creates a clubby, cozy atmosphere amidst the hustle and bustle of tourists and business lunchers.
Fall of every year, Berghoff
takes to the streets for their Oktoberfest explosion. A street-closing extravaganza, this tradition packs in the stein-carrying crowds.
Interesting factoid: Berghoff was the first restaurant in Chicago to be
granted a liquor license after the repeal of Prohibition. Perhaps in homage to that legacy, the restaurant offers its very own label beer and bourbon in
addition to other German and American brews in the classically appointed bar.
